Daimler Heritage: TOPICS FOR JULY 2010

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Jun 01, 2010

80 years ago – 18 and 19 July 1930: Rudolf Caracciola won the Grand Prix of Ireland – and in so doing, the Irish Times Trophy – driving a Mercedes-Benz SSK. His average speed for the 480-kilometre course was 139 km/h. The SSK was an advanced development of the SS model; with its 7-litre displacement, the engine developed 125 kW without and 165 kW with supercharger.

80 years ago – July 1930: A special-production Mercedes-Benz “Nürburg” 460 was delivered to Pope Pius XI. It was the brand’s first “Popemobile”.

50 years ago – 27 July 1960: The supervisory board of Daimler-Benz AG authorised the purchase of 1.5 million square metres of industrial premises at Wörth near Karlsruhe. The plan was to build a new truck assembly plant. Five years later, on 14 July 1965, the first truck assembled there came off the production line, a Mercedes-Benz LP 608.

20 years ago – 18 July 1990: Following the ground-breaking ceremony performed by Werner Niefer, then Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, the foundation stone was laid for the new Rastatt plant. The official opening took place in late 1992.

Mercedes-Benz at "Klassikwelt Bodensee"

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart/Friedrichshafen, Germany, Jun 01, 2010

- From 3 to 6 June 2010 in Friedrichshafen
- The brand will be presenting open-top vehicles based on the theme "traditional open-air driving pleasure"

Mercedes-Benz will be represented for the first time at this year's "Klassikwelt Bodensee" (Lake Constance Classic World) from 3 to 6 June 2010 in Friedrichshafen, where it will be putting on an extensive vehicle display. Featuring an extremely diverse programme of events, the fair is a reflection of the history of mobility comprising historic means of transport used on land, on water and in the air. As such it is an ideal match for the basic motivation which drove Gottlieb Daimler (1834 to 1900), who constantly pursued the comprehensive vision of promoting mobility with the aid of his wide range of vehicles of all types.

"Our stand in Hall 7 will be based on the theme of traditional open-air driving pleasure", explains Michael Bock, head of Mercedes-Benz Classic. "We will be displaying the famous 300 SL Roadster, which made its debut in 1957. There will also be a couple of young classics on display: a 124-series Cabriolet – the open four-seater was produced from 1991 to 1997 – as well as a 107-series Mercedes-Benz SL (1971 to 1989)."

The stand will also include a Mercedes-Benz Museum shop. The brand clubs devoted to the S-Class and the 107 and 129-series SL will also be represented at "Klassikwelt Bodensee". Visitors will be able to view the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car in Outdoor Area East in front of Exhibition Hall 6 – along with the new E-Class Cabriolet, an SLK and an SL. These open-top vehicles form the link between the Mercedes-Benz vehicles on display in Hall 7 and the present day – and at the same time represent the classics of the future.

The attention-grabber in Courtyard 1 will be the Mercedes-Benz Classic Truck, which will be going on public display for the first time with its newly designed interior and exterior. The truck presents the history of the brand and also highlights the wide range of products and services available from Mercedes-Benz Classic.

This year will mark the third time that the "Klassikwelt Bodensee" has taken place following its much-heralded premiere in 2008. The event is held in various locations in and around Friedrichshafen: in the grounds of the exhibition hall in Friedrichshafen, at the airport, on Lake Constance and even on stretches of the railway. Visitors will be able to view all types of historic vehicles, from cars, commercial vehicles, trains and ships, right through to aircraft. The organiser is expecting around 380 exhibitors. The show is also associated with a classic car market. A parallel event - "the electric avenue expo" - is devoted to electric mobility. Additional information is available at www.klassikwelt-bodensee.de.

COMAND APS multimedia and navigation system: Free map update for three years in 39 European countries

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Stuttgart, Germany, Jun 01, 2010 – For a period of three years, Mercedes-Benz customers will in future receive the latest map updates for their COMAND APS multimedia system free of charge. Mercedes-Benz partners will upload map updates into the navigation system when the car is brought to their premises. Thanks to these new, free map updates, Mercedes drivers with COMAND APS will reach their destinations even more rapidly and reliably in future.

The COMAND APS multimedia system from Mercedes-Benz features a Europe-wide navigation system with special capabilities. As the data are stored on a hard disc (40 gigabytes), the system is able to access the navigation information much faster than a DVD-based system, and calculate the route more rapidly. Thanks to the new map update-programme the current map data are automatically uploaded during a regular workshop service visit. Mercedes-Benz will also use its web pages to inform customers when a new update is available. On customer request, updates can also be provided by a Mercedes-Benz partner outside the normal service intervals.

In addition to a high-grade navigation function and a high-resolution colour display, COMAND APS features a DVD player for audio and video plus a Music Register for around 1000 compressed music files in the MP3 or WMA format, which can be transferred to the register from memory cards. Mercedes-Benz combines COMAND APS with the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system and a so-called text-to-speech function as standard. This enables the driver to have route-specific traffic reports, SMS messages, address book entries or radio station names read out to them. The system also automatically reads out new traffic reports that are relevant to the chosen route. The purchase price of the COMAND APS multimedia system for the E-Class Saloon is 3046.40 Euro (incl. VAT).

From model year 2011, Mercedes-Benz provides the new, free update for the navigation maps for new cars in all model series equipped with COMAND APS. This applies in 39 European countries, and for three years from the date of first registration. The price benefit for this map update amounts to several hundred Euro. Since it is vehicle-specific, this update entitlement is also transferable to the new owner if the vehicle is sold prior to the end of the three-year period.
