SPY: The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Facelift (W 212) snagged in a parking lot

The E-Class is set to receive midlife refreshment intended to keep the car up-to-date and attractive for clients. Scheduled to bow in December and with the official reveal programmed for NAIAS Detroit 2013, the facelift version of the W/S 212 series is to arrive in global Mercedes-Benz showrooms beginning with spring next year. The front fascia will undergo a massive revision, whereas the rest of the vehicle is to retain the current aspect with minor upgrades.

The quad headlights are appearantly living their last moments, because the new-generation E-Class will premiere the single-unit lamps, a return to the front end styling of the old W 124. Inspired by the new S-Class (W 222), the facelift variant will also feature a new, more upright radiator grille and a stylish apron. While we are no longer fully sure that the much criticized Ponton crease will cease to exist, we are feeling it will be a bit smoothened to better integrate in the side profile. New graphics for the LED rear lights and a slightly rehauled boot lid and back bumper will enable the full and balanced completion of entire design.

The 2013MY E-Class will also debut some minor, detail changes to the dashboard. Expect to see a modified centre console, new 3-spoke and 4-spoke steering wheel models and new air vents. The new Merc also gets the latest gimmicks in safety, communication and comfort. Among the highlights, we mention a new generation of the DISTRONIC PLUS radar, the latest version of the THERMOTRONIC automatic air-conditioning unit, ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE and the COMAND Online infotainment system. All in all, the new E-Class Facelift will most likely share most of the latest technical innovations with the new S-Class.

The engine lineup won't suffer major modifications: only tweaks regarding power and efficiency levels. However, we expect Mercedes-Benz engineers have further developed the BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 units to deliver a higher output. As intensively speculated in the last two years, the E 350 variant should boast around 354 hp, whereas the range-topping E 500 could deliver at least 435 hp, if not more.
